Jesse Armstrong has starred in the sequel to Succession on HBO, but it is not a series project.
Armstrong, who created the multiple Emmy Award-winning series, is currently writing a feature film for HBO. He will also serve as executive producer alongside Frank Rich. The two worked together on the Succession EP and both have general deals with HBO.
The film is based on Armstrong’s original idea and centers on four friends who come together in the midst of the global financial crisis. Production is currently fast-tracked to begin later this year.
Armstrong won four Emmy Awards for Best Writing for his work on Succession (one for each season of the show). The series also won Best Drama in three of the four years covered (it missed out on Game of Thrones’ final season in 2019).
How Armstrong will follow up “Succession” has been the subject of intense speculation in the nearly two years since the show ended on HBO. Armstrong has only a handful of feature screenwriting credits, so the film is something of a linchpin. However, one of them, 2009’s In the Loop (co-written with Simon Blackwell, Armando Iannucci, and Tony Roche), was nominated for an Oscar. Most commonly adapted screenplay.
Armstrong is also an executive producer on HBO and BBC’s upcoming Michaela Coel-directed sequel to I May Destroy You, First Day on Earth. He is repped by UTA, 42, and Johnson Shapiro.
