Openai is investigating reports of potential data breaches affecting millions of user accounts, but says it has yet to find evidence to support the claim.
The alleged violations circulating on Friday’s hacking forum suggest that threat actors have undermined login details for 20 million Openai accounts, including email addresses and passwords.
The individual behind the claim is trying to provide an obvious sample of the stolen data and sell the complete data set.
The truth behind these claims remains unconfirmed, but Openai says it has been receiving “serious” reports and is actively investigating the situation.
The reliability of the claim has not been verified, but in a statement, Openai said it is considering reporting.
“We take these claims seriously,” an Openai spokesperson said.
“We have seen no evidence so far that this is related to a compromise in the Openai system.”
The AI company is the manufacturer of ChatGpt, an AI chatbot that has exploded in popularity since its original launch in late 2022.
Cybersecurity expert Jamie Akhtar, CEO and co-founder of Cybersmart, said consumers need to pay extra attention by updating their passwords and login credentials. It warned that cybercriminals could consider exploiting incidents.

“If verified, this violation can have a significant impact on both Openai and its customers,” he said.
“As millions of people and businesses envelop the company’s technology in their daily lives, the potential damage to Openai’s reputation for data security can be significant.
“What’s worse, compromised accounts can be used to access and abuse sensitive customer data, abuse OpenAI APIs, or distribute malware and other cybertroubles.
“It could also be a cybercriminal who uses stolen user credentials to commit targeted phishing campaigns, stolen identity, or financial fraud.
“This violation has not yet been verified by Openai, but as a precaution, anyone using the tool should update their password and credentials.
“And if you don’t already have it, turn on multifactor authentication within OpenAI settings. This should give you another layer of protection if your password is compromised.”
