It’s the first weekend of 2025 and I have to say the new year is starting a bit slow. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes it’s better when new shows and movies aren’t released as often so you can watch everything you missed over the past year (or, as is often the case, years).
We have posted a list of the worst and best TV shows of 2024. The latter may give you ideas about what to watch that may have fallen off your radar. And as always, I scoured the internet for new things streaming this weekend, as well as some theatrical releases that might tickle your fancy.
Also, Apple TV is free for everyone this weekend. There are too many great shows and movies on Apple’s streaming service to fit into 48 hours, but we’ve put together another guide with suggestions on what to watch.
If you have any tips or if we missed something, send us a message on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook. You can check out last weekend’s streaming guide here.
New and noteworthy information this weekend (12/13/24)
Wallace and Gromit: Revenge of the Dead (Netflix)
The adorable duo of Wallace and Gromit return in this family-friendly Netflix movie. This is an unusual offering from Netflix in that it has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 100% from critics and 98% from viewers. That’s pretty wild! Most Netflix movies rarely release Fresh. Of course, fans of this adorable claymation duo wouldn’t expect anything less. This should be a great movie to watch with kids (or just to feel nostalgic with your inner child).
Lockerbie: The Search for Truth (Peacock)
Colin Firth stars in this harrowing true story about the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, on December 21, 1988. Firth is such a great actor and this is truly incredible. He plays Dr. Jim Swire, who is appointed as a spokesperson by the families of the victims as they seek to uncover the truth behind the terrorist attack that claimed the lives of all 259 people on board. A total of five episodes air every Thursday on Peacock.
2025 Golden Globe Awards (Paramount+)
The grand Golden Globe Awards ceremony kicks off this Sunday at 8pm ET/5pm PT on Paramount+ and CBS. Nikki Glaser will be the host. I don’t watch many award shows these days, but they do have their fun (and frustrating) moments.
The Rig – Season 2 (Prime Video)
Prime Video’s horror series about an offshore oil rig is returning with a second season. I hadn’t seen the first one, so I was mostly listening to a mixture. However, if you’re a fan of the genre or series, give it another watch. The entire season is available on Prime Video.
Cunk on Life (Netflix)
Philomena Canck returns to explore the meaning of life. Or something. Who knows about Cunk? She’s funny and quirky and her documentaries are very entertaining. Cunk (actually Diane Morgan) spoofs the documentary genre, conducts ridiculous interviews, and is overall a lot of fun.
The Fall Guy (Prime Video)
The Fall Guy was previously available on Peacock, but now it’s available to even more viewers on Prime Video. I’ve been meaning to watch the Ryan Gosling/Emily Blunt action movie for years, and I think I’ll finally get to see it this weekend. It got great reviews, had a charismatic star and a fun setting, and yet somehow bombed at the box office. Proceed to figure. . .
Selling the City (Netflix)
The real estate melodrama from the creators of Selling the OC, Selling The City transports viewers to the East Coast with a new cast of beautiful characters and melodrama. I’m not a big fan of soap operas, and I devoured Sons of Anarchy, but I have to admit that it’s just not my thing. Maybe it’s yours!
Horizon: An American Saga Part 1 (Netflix)
Kevin Costner’s expansive, ambitious, old-school Western Horizon: An American Saga is just the first of four planned films, with the second part set to hit theaters sometime in 2025. It is scheduled to be published. The film was a critical and financial flop, but has found new life on streaming. And now that it’s on Netflix, it’s sure to gain even more viewers. I really liked this movie, but it certainly moves at an odd pace and eschews traditional narrative in favor of something more gradual and less plot-driven. I hope Chapter 2 unravels the loose threads and moves the story forward.
Wicked (VOD)
One of my favorite movies of 2024 is now available for rent or purchase on Prime Video and more. I’d like to buy it, but decided to order the 4K Blu-ray version, which won’t be released until next month. Both sound and visuals make the 4K disc worth the wait. I absolutely love this Broadway musical adaptation and saw it for the second time when I visited New York last year, and I went to see not one, not two, not three, but four Broadway shows in two days. I did. It was fun!
Other movies available on Video on Demand include:
Directed by Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult, about an FBI agent who tracks down bank robbers who rob banks to fund white supremacist terrorist organizations. It’s based on a true story and it looks great. I’m not sure if I should buy it, but I think it’ll be on streaming services soon. “Wild Robot” was my second favorite animated movie of 2024, behind “Inside Head 2.” It’s a beautifully animated, heartwarming film that’s sure to tug at the heartstrings of parents while delighting young viewers. In The Return, Ralph Fiennes plays Odysseus, who washes up on the shores of Ithaca after the Trojan War. A retelling of Odysseus without any myth. It has received fairly positive reviews from critics and viewers. Cillian Murphy plays a father who discovers a disturbing revelation in a local convent in Ireland in 1985. This is both disturbing and wonderful.
Nosferatu (inside the theater)
Last week I listed this as a theatrical release worth seeing, and now that I’ve seen it I’d like to recommend it again. I know this may not be true for everyone, but readers generally either love it or hate it, and I fall into the “love it” camp. You can read my glowing review here.
Other films currently in theaters include Mufasa, Sonic 3, and The Brutalist. The last movie I want to go see is not in my theater. Adrien Brody plays Laszlo Toth, an architect who flees post-war Europe to build a new life in America. This movie and its star, Adrien Brody, have been getting a lot of attention. It’s 3 hours and 35 minutes long, but it sounds great. Still, 94% of critics and 89% of audiences rate this A24 movie highly on Rotten Tomatoes. Not too shabby.
Contents broadcast every week
There has certainly been a slowdown when it comes to weekly shows, with many shows ending over the past few weeks, leaving fewer new shows to watch. Which is good because I have a lot to catch up on. With some pretty big new shows coming up, from Severance to Season 2 of The Night Agent, we’re glad to see a lull in content.
Dexter: Original Sin has become the show I’m most looking forward to this week. I always look forward to new episodes airing on Paramount every Friday. It’s amazing how good this show is, my expectations were so low, but how great the younger cast plays the older cast from the original series. This is my review. (Paramount)
Star Wars: The Skeleton Crew continues to be a lot of fun, a wonderfully lighthearted pirate adventure that mirrors The Goonies and pays homage to many of the great classic adventure films of old. Jude Law is great and the cast of kids who make up the heroes do a great job as well. This is the best Star Wars on Disney+, along with the first two seasons of The Mandalorian and the first season of Andor. Only a few more episodes left.
I’m way behind Silo (Apple TV) Landman, Outlander, but I still have to watch Squid Game. I haven’t even started Creature Commandos yet, but it seems like a pretty fun DC animated show. But I’m watching Say Nothing on Hulu. This is a wonderful, exciting, disturbing and based on a true story that took place during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. I also finally watched Bad Boys: Ride Or Die, which I found incredibly funny and silly, and Killers Of The Flower Moon, which I reviewed here. It should have won Best Picture over Oppenheimer.
