Film director Ashutosh Gowariker recently opened up about his long association with music maestro AR Rahman and humorously said that he owes Rahman an Oscar for his success in Hollywood. The director, who has worked with Luhrmann on nearly all but three of his films, shared some insight in an interview with Milch about how Slumdog Millionaire changed their professional relationship. .
Gowariker revealed that Rahman was originally scheduled to compose the music for the 2008 film What’s Your Raashe?, but the collaboration was put on hold as Rahman started receiving offers from Hollywood. That same year, Luhrmann composed the score for Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire, which won eight Academy Awards, including two for Luhrmann.
Gowariker joked, “I still sometimes say to Rahman, “You should be grateful that you won an Oscar because you sent him to Hollywood.”
Gowarika spoke about Rahman’s creative process and praised the composer’s keen intuition. “Lerman understands the core of the idea quickly and visualizes the situation. But he takes time because he is responding to the director’s vision rather than making an independent album,” he said, adding, He stressed the need to respect Rahman’s methodical approach.
Interestingly, Luhrmann himself recently revealed his experience working on Slumdog Millionaire in secret. At the Indian Film Festival in Melbourne, he recalled being warned by director Danny Boyle to take a step back. The advice was that his work was likely to be rejected because many composers worked as his directors. This made Rahman understand the sincerity of the offer and seize the opportunity. This decision paid off, as Slumdog Millionaire won the Academy Award for Best Picture and Luhrmann became a global icon.
