Amazon The project comes just two years after MGM Studios acquired world rights to the Warhammer 40,000 game from Games Workshop with Henry Cavill starring and executive producing the cinematic universe. The first installment of a potential series, the TV series, is currently officially in development at the studio.
Sources say the mini-room was assembled to focus on the creative direction of the Warhammer universe. According to sources, it has been decided to proceed with the development of a television series as the first project based on the materials prepared by the scriptwriters. A showrunner has not yet been chosen, but a contract has been finalized.
The timing is no coincidence. In its annual financial report filed in July, Games Workshop said that in order for the streamer to retain the rights it originally acquired, the company and Amazon must agree to “creative guidelines for movies and television series developed by Amazon” in 2024. He pointed out that a mutual agreement needs to be reached by December 2020. It was extended to December 2022 and a year later for a further 12 months.
Cavill took to Instagram to tease a new phase in the film adaptation of Warhammer 40,000, a passion project for him.
“My amazing team and I, along with some of the brightest minds at Games Workshop, are holed up in a concept room hammering out our approach to the enormity and grandeur of the Warhammer world,” he writes. “Together, we have sifted through so many great characters and pored over old books and texts. Together, we have gained the agreement of upper management at both Amazon and Games Workshop to create a universe We’ve found a great place to start.”
Warhammer 40,000 takes place in the distant future, where humanity stands on the brink of its brightest future or its darkest. The threats to the Empire of Mankind are many. A traitor driven by ambition, an alien empire vowing to take back the planet, and the corruption of reality by an evil god.
Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Natalie Viscuso partnered with Cavill to secure the Warhammer 40,000 IP before taking it to Amazon. Vertigo is executive producing alongside Cavill and GAW’s Andy Smillie and Max Bottrill, along with Amazon MG< Studios.
“I’ve loved Warhammer since I was a kid and this moment is really special to me,” Cavill said as Amazon’s initial announcement rang out. “The opportunity to guide this world of film from its inception is both an honor and a responsibility.”
