Karma (1933) was the first film to introduce on-screen kissing, starring Devika Rani and her husband Himanshu Rai. The film was produced by Rai, who offered the female lead role to Devika, with whom he became romantically involved. The story of Karma was about Devika Rani, a Maharani who rebels against her father and falls in love with the neighboring prince Himanshu Rai. The film was released in theaters in 1933 and was a huge flop. The film gained recognition overseas and gained immense popularity among the public.

Himanshu Rai and Devika Rani’s on-screen chemistry led to the first on-screen kiss in the history of Hindi cinema. Well, Devika Rani’s fearless character made everyone fall in love with her. Devika Rani’s on-screen kiss broke all norms and became embroiled in controversy.
