The historical roots of Donald Trump’s aggressive nationalism

Five days before taking office, Donald Trump made a nervous call with Denmark Prime Minister, clarifying the Greenland’s autonomous Danish island. In the inauguration speech, Trump declared as follows: “I think the United States is a growing country again, increase wealth, expand its territory, build cities, raise expectations, and lead the flag to a new view of beautiful perspective.” So, Canada has repeatedly stated that it should be a state of the United States. On weekends, he announced tariffs and sanctions in Colombia after saying that American allies did not accept American airplanes full of expelled immigrants. (President Colombia’s Gustabopetro agree to recede on Sunday night and accept the plane.)

In many cases, in his first term, Trump has recently heard these aggressive and expansion notes, although even inward ethnic or isolated. It is still time to decipher what Trump intends in his second phase, but his more militaristic comments are related to foreign allies, and the United States has overseas power. In terms of how to demonstrate it, it led to a question about what the next four years looked.

In order to talk about Trump’s approach to foreign policy, I have recently won the Yale Puritzer’s Professor Greg Grandin, the author of the future book, “America, the New History of the New World”. I talked to Greg Grandin on the phone. In a conversation edited for length and clearness, Trump should not be regarded as isolatedist, whether he has a consistent vision of national interest, and his remarks about Panama. We discussed whether it is part of the historical tradition.

I don’t want to fall into a Trap that reads Trump’s speech so closely, but compared to his first in 2016, Trump is talking about foreign policy and diplomacy. Do you have any semester?

Well, obviously, there are many continuity, such as the threat of using tariffs and the threat to move the national interests, and that he focuses on China. But I was different, and what I clearly saw in the first speech was that there were still many notes of angry nationalism and betrayal, but he was more excited or more excited. I think there was a moment when it seemed to be looking for. More exhilarating, national vision. And that often mean that in the United States is a kind of frontier call. In the case of Trump, he clearly linked it, not just the new frontier of science and the universe. He explicitly linked it to the return of territory. And so many territories do not split. But I think he is looking for more rally, and I think he finds it with the old -fashioned image of Frontier.

When did the US president finally speak like this?

I distinguish the frontier as a general compared pHOR and distinguish the actual territory frontier. When the President actually spoke of Frontier as an actual territory, that is, before going to the war with Spain, William McKinry told the fate of the manifest before taking Cuba and the Philippines as an actual territory. I don’t think. 。 I think you have to return to James Pork, Mexico and Texas. He has identified the future acquisition of the territory as the key to the prosperity, welfare, and fate of the United States. Certainly, after the Civil War, the United States concluded the western conquest, so the President will see that it will fill our country.

Trump was an Andrew Jackson worshiper and was often spoken as a Jackson in his first term. Did it make sense for you?

Yeah, they did a lot of things about Andrew Jackson, and there were many Jackson calls in the sense that he was the first President and the first anti -Erite. He opened the door to the White House, let people put in people, and expanded franchise to all whites. But now he seems to be listening more about McKinry. Trump revives the name of Macinley (the mountain was called Denari) and likes McKinry tariffs. Jackson uses one variant of the United States’s political nationalism, which defines freedom as freedom of freedom. White men define freedom as freedom from government rule. I think Jackson is the avatar.

I think McKinley is another aspect avatar that Trump is currently expanding. McKinley was basically a president who moderated the leap from the expansion of continental territory to the Pacific Ocean, and was a leap in the Caribbean with the war of the Spanish Americans in 1898. The US industry by closing out European and British manufacturers. I think Trump is more identified as McKinry from the viewpoint of tariffs. I don’t know how much he has noticed about the politics of the 1898 war.

I guess.

But importantly, the 1898 war was a qualitative leap in justification of war. It was the first war that was explicitly fought under the name of human rights. Spain has made Cuban and Puerto Rico’s ruthless rebellion, and the United States has evoked human rights as one of the justifying human rights. As the story progressed, McKinley fell on his knees on the night before he decided to go to the war. , And he asked what he should do, and God saved Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines and said.

This reminds George W. Bush in some respects, but it is not a playing card. When I explained Trump’s vision earlier, I had a method of thinking about Bush, but it was actually very clear and certainly in a rhetoric.

Yes, I think so. Bush was very cautious about his vision on the cowboy’s story occasionally and presenting his vision on terrorism as a liberal value or universal advancement. That’s why you see many Trumps from that movement.

Trump has a much more aggressive vision of the United States of America’s power, which had no worries about the new conservatives and George W. Bush. You can say what you want about the old liberal order. At least, the starting point of diplomacy was that the state had a mutual interest and the cooperative would proceed. Trump is the opposite. Trump says that international order is dominant and is asserting his national interests. It is an old vision of international relations. I think it’s a dangerous vision.

I agree. But does he have the concept of national interest besides arranging his pockets?

At a certain level, I agree that it is likely to be a complete grab bag. Someone used the drunken millionaire airplane image flying to Las Vegas. That is the inauguration ceremony. Everyone is preparing to grasp what they can. Trumpcoin, melania coin. It is difficult to handle everything that is happening. I think Trump is Benal. I think he is clearly going out to enrich himself and his family. In some respects, it is a vision of a kind of father -in -law that has won, Trump is the father and the family.

On the other hand, I have to say that if you return, you are spending time about why he left the Reform Party in 2000. He is consistently anti -free trade from the beginning, and he always gets it. He was always a great President Reagan. I didn’t like some of his trade treaty.
