DC’s Secret Six will return this March with a new lineup and a new mystery to solve.
In the series, held in the aftermath of last year’s absolute power event, Nianal (Dreamer), Jayna Kamura and Superman’s John Kent are DC’s toughest anti-hero teams, including Catman, Deadshot and Black Alice I was forced to work with him. . Their mission? Tracks the missing Amanda Waller who disappeared from Belle Reve’s cell.
The sixth issue series is written by Nicole Maines and illustrated by Stephen Segovia. Newsarama caught up with Mains. Maines has drawn the dreamer on screen on the Supergirl TV show, and has continued to pilot the character’s comic book adventures for the past few years, learning more about the new book and her ongoing “Five Year Plans.” It’s there. nia nal…
Newsarama: Hello Nicole. Let’s start with the beginning of Secret Six #1. This first issue actually centers around Nia, Jon, and Jay. They have all experienced a lot recently, even before the events of this issue. So, are they doing well?
Nicole Maines: You can see that the characters post absolute power. Perhaps more than any other hero, Jay, John and Nia were targeted and influenced by Amanda Waller’s campaign, so they find them in the aftermath and see how each of them deal with trauma. It’s there.
John is still a Superson. He is judged that things are normal, things are fine and we are back to it. With Nia, we’re probably seeing her struggle in new ways, but this girl has been around for years and always, she’s still awful, still awful, I think she’s still a terrible place because she’s throwing courage because she can just do it. Get victory. And Jay is beginning to spiral down like this, like a typhoon of anger and sadness and the need for revenge and justice, in a way that is very concerned about his boyfriend.
This issue makes it seem like John and Jay feel like they probably feel closer to a breakpoint despite the fact that they made this agreement to move to San Francisco together…
Yes, who’s never done it? I’ll fix it! The baby will fix it! Yeah. (lol)
Amanda Waller was a architect of many of this sadness. And now she suddenly disappeared. What can you say about that?
Amanda Waller was on a fast track to find a one-way ticket to Bell Rev, with no signs of leaving. Dreamer left her in her cells where all the metahuman memories, the superhero community, Batman, where the Bat caves are, and what the Cyborg’s real name is. She knows it, but she can’t get it. But of course, removing such a huge chess piece from the table in the DC Universe clearly won’t fly anyone. Someone needs to go and try to regain those memories.
Waller is truly at the heart of absolute power, and she is approaching this issue. What makes her such a powerful character?
I love Amanda Waller. I’m interested in characters like “doing bad things for the right reasons.” Perhaps more than anyone else, she’s embodied as “If you can’t beat them, join them.” She is a black woman from a low-income community who lost half her family to gun violence, sexual violence and revenge, and in her quest to control her situation, she is the persona of the villain in this comic book. It’s deeply absorbed into. Absolute power is absolutely corrupted and I think she knows it, but you can’t stop a runaway train.
For Secret Six, I really wanted to make sure I have a story that watches the aftermath right after the big comic book event. “Okay, here is the absolute power, the planet Lazarus, the world of beasts, the fear of the knights…” But what happens after the big summer event? People were getting hurt, and there has to be some kind of political and emotional fallout from all of this, as some big shit happened. Gamora was defeated again, and then another person’s site became the dictator’s theatre collapse. The president was assassinated, so what is it now? Do you just move on?
That’s where Jay is. He said, “I see everyone around me itching to get back to normal, but I don’t have that option. And with John, he was a man of his boyfriend and his friend. I see gas like this in this revenge spiral. He says, “Hey, hey, hey, we’re still good people, right?”
And that’s where Secret Six came in. What can you say about the rest of the lineup?
I chose these characters. Because I wanted to make sure at least half of the team is a Classic Secret 6 member. “What is Superman doing?!” I wanted to take this particular position where these three characters were good people themselves. There are also Catman, Deadshot and Black Alice. They also, even in the situation they like, when the world decides you are a bad guy, mom, you are a bad guy. There’s not much you can do to launch that label.
It’s easy for John. He has a big Superman emblem on his chest, so at least in the eyes of others, he defaults to being a good guy all the time. Jay and Nia are new in the scene – they don’t get that option. We have seen Green Arrows welcomed with open arms to the Society of Justice. Dreamer? Do you think she got one of those cute little Justice League cards? noooo!
She’s literally passed away too!
She’s literally dead! That’s another thing. The dreamer said, “I think I’m immortal, so now I need to keep dealing with this. Make a good decision in my life.” I was talking to some of the editors. He told them what he saw on Bluesky. That’s what some of the children called her the ultimate girl’s failure. I’m pleased that DC has finally got someone who really stands in that niche. We have a lot of girl bosses. There’s Diana Prince and Lois Lane. How about girls’ mistakes?
Obviously, you’ve built a very strong connection with the NIA in the last few years, both on TV and comics…
Some say it’s unhealthy.
What does it feel to you to be able to truly own and pilot this character as a writer?
I love it. I’m always asked, do I want to write other characters? And, of course, this is what I want to do now. I have such a deep connection with her and I think she’s been so cool and crazy. I have a five-year plan and it’s fine. I am very blessed to be in a position where DC continues to say yes to me. It’s truly the ultimate honor to lead this character from the show to the comics and make her part of these big events.
And you know, you know, not “wake up” lol, but one of these main characters, especially in the political situation, is a trans woman, and that’s what she is. It’s not the center of the story, but that this is part of her life… In the first few pages of Secret Six 6 #1, we’ve put her into this vision of her bottom surgery. I’m watching it have. I think we can have those representatives and those little nods in another part of who she is, as we say “there are two genders that don’t exist.” – I think I can. I will continue to have this visibility in comics.
Also, she’s stuck between her gay boyfriend and a bisexual superman, then she’s with Black Alice, whatever she is – you try to give her a label and she turns you into a frog You’ll do something then, it’s scary to you. And we have Catman, the bisexual daddy of the resident, and whatever f*** he continues with dead shot…it’s fun. And that’s the true meaning of Secret Six!
Secret Six #1 will be released by DC on March 5th.
We also talked about Nicole and Suicide Squad: Dream Team last year.
