Ryan Gosling is headed to a galaxy far, far away.
The three-time Oscar nominee is in talks to topline a Star Wars feature project to be directed by Deadpool and Wolverine director Shawn Levy.
Details on Star Wars projects are harder to come by than plans for an orbiting planet killer, and this one is no exception. Levy has been developing the Star Wars feature since 2022, and Jonathan Tropper, who has worked with Levy on films such as This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project, has been working on the script for more than a year. There is. Levy also joins Star Wars steward Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm in producing the feature through her 21 Laps banner.
It’s unclear when Levy’s project will begin. The Star Wars saga has spanned hundreds of years, detailing the progression from the Galactic Republic to dictatorship to rebellion. It is also unclear whether it is related to the Jedi and their Sith enemies. However, it has no connection to the so-called Skywalker Saga, and the story revolves around established and beloved characters Luke Skywalker and his father Anakin.
Sources say it will be an independent film. Lucasfilm does not comment on the details of the impending deal or project.
Sources say Gosling’s development is a final move for Levy’s film schedule. The filmmaker is looking to direct an established boy band film at Paramount, which would reunite him with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. However, Gosling’s interest and involvement suddenly moved the Star Wars project into hyperspace. If the deal goes through, the project will continue to fly like the Millennium Falcon and not only be Levy’s next movie, but also the next Star Wars movie, with cameras potentially rolling this fall. There is sex. The Mandalorian and Grogu will wrap up in mid-December and will be released on May 22, 2026.
Gosling’s flight will be a rare opportunity to have an actual A-lister on board for a Star Wars production. The original trilogy starred up-and-coming actors and British veterans, and turned actors Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher into household names. The prequels followed a similar model, but The Phantom Menace further cemented Liam Neeson’s Oscar nomination for Schindler’s List. During his time at Disney, J.J. Abrams also brought in new and up-and-coming talent while bringing back original stars.
In a bit of synchronicity, Gosling was first mentioned for the Star Wars role in 2013, when Gosling and Zac Efron were eyed by Abrams for playing a family member who might eventually become Kylo Ren. That’s when the rumor spread on the internet.
The actor last starred in Universal’s The Fall Guy and is repped by CAA and Sloan Offer. He recently finished filming Project Hail Mary, another space travel movie with Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
