AGRA: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) bans students from Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan from commenting on domestic and international incidents on social media and asks for prior permission before leaving the city issued new guidelines mandating this. Mohammad Dilshad reports on their movements.
AMU Deputy Superintendent Professor Syed Ali Nawaz Zaidi said on Tuesday that the university is holding a meeting with students from the three countries to convey the new guidelines.
“Students have been sensitized about the responsible use of social media and the impact of cyber misconduct. They have been warned not to engage in activities that may hurt people’s feelings. In case of violation, they will be disciplined. We will discuss these guidelines with students from other countries in the coming days,” Zaidi said.
Some students welcomed the new guidelines. Akhil Kaushal, a student, said, “This decision comes after Hindu students at AMU staged a protest a month ago after three Bangladeshi students made offensive comments on social media. “It was done,” he said.
The university expelled two students over the incident and issued a warning to the third student, banning him from taking classes at AMU in the future. Currently, 176 international students from 26 countries are enrolled at our university.
