OpenAI announced Sora Turbo, its text-to-video AI model, to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users, marking a significant step in its expansion into multimodal AI technology. This development puts OpenAI in direct competition with tools from big tech companies like Meta, Google, and Stability AI.
First introduced in February as part of a limited research preview, Sora Turbo is now accessible to a wider audience. ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers can create 20-second videos at up to 1080p resolution with widescreen, vertical, or square format options. All of these can be created at no additional charge.
Although currently not available in the EU, UK, or Switzerland, Sora Turbo is being rolled out in regions where ChatGPT is already active.
The text-to-video market is heating up, with Meta’s Make-A-Video, Google’s Imagen Video, and Stability AI’s Stable Video Diffusion already vying for dominance. OpenAI’s entry signals the company’s intention to lead in this emerging field.
“We are working on pricing to suit different types of users and expect to make it available early next year,” the company said in a blog post, hinting at further expansion.
Users can generate videos up to 20 seconds in resolution up to 1080p. This model supports different aspect ratios, including widescreen, portrait, and square. Sora also allows users to bring in their own assets to remix, extend, and blend content, or create entirely new videos from text prompts.
A new interface has been introduced to enhance user interaction. The storyboarding tool allows for precise input specifications for each frame, and the Featured and Recent feeds show a continuously updated flow of work from the Sora community.
Sora is included at no extra charge with your ChatGPT Plus account and offers up to 50 videos per month at 480p resolution or fewer at 720p resolution. For power users, the Pro plan offers 10x more usage, access to higher resolutions, and longer video playback times.
OpenAI has put in place strict safeguards to prevent abuse and emphasized its commitment to responsible use of AI. Sora blocks the creation and uploading of harmful content, including child sexual abuse material and sexual deepfakes. “At launch, uploading people will be restricted, but we plan to roll out this feature to more users as we refine our deepfake mitigations,” the company added.
