Hollywood’s biggest stars gathered Sunday night to officially kick off awards season at the 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards, honoring major achievements in both television and film.
It was a night of high expectations and unexpected triumphs, with brand new hosts and plenty of unforgettable costumes. Stars like Timothée Chalamet, Melissa McCarthy, Dakota Fanning, Zendaya, and Elton John all brought their A-game. Vin Diesel also said hi to Dwayne Johnson.
Key takeaways from the ceremony include:
“Emilia Perez” and “The Brutalist” dominate film awards
It’s clear the Golden Globes love Netflix’s unconventional Spanish-language musical crime drama after it nabbed 10 nominations, with four wins including Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) confirming it. It shows. My colleague Taryn Ryder reported that the audience inside the Beverly Hilton was particularly enthusiastic about the film.

The Brutalist entered the ceremony with seven nominations and won three awards, including Best Picture and Best Drama. Its length is also unconventional, clocking in at 3 hours and 35 minutes with very little intermission.
Both films received positive reviews at film festivals throughout the year, and after winning the first major awards of the season, this one will be beaten out for future honors.
TV winners looked a lot like the Emmys
If you watched the 2024 Emmy Awards in September, you probably already knew most of the Golden Globe Television Award winners. Hux, Baby Reindeer and Shogun all won top awards in their respective categories at both ceremonies.
Many of the acting awards went to the same people: Anna Sawai, Hiroyuki Sanada, Jodie Foster, Jessica Gunning, Jeremy Allen White, and Jean Smart.
Since the Emmys focus solely on television, they have time to select more winners, so each ceremony breaks down the awards slightly differently. For example, at the Golden Globe Awards, Jessica Gunning won Best Supporting Female Actor in Television, an award that includes all genres. She won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie. Both awards were for the same supporting role in the limited series “Baby Reindeer.”
One of the major differences between the awards ceremonies was that Colin Farrell won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television. He appeared on “The Penguin,” but it didn’t air in time for the 2024 Emmy nominations.
The stage is set for the Oscar race.
As it is the first major awards ceremony ahead of the Oscars, the actors who took home trophies were a surprise to many. Zoe Saldaña, Kieran Culkin, Demi Moore, Fernanda Torres and Adrien Brody are currently the frontrunners. Although they gave emotional speeches, Culkin’s dominant emotion was humor.
There were a few things worth noting. Angelina Jolie was expected to win Best Female Actor in a Motion Picture Drama, but the trophy went to Fernanda Torres. Critical darling Anora was shut out completely, and the ever-popular Wicked won one award for Best Picture and one for Box Office. “Wild Robot” was expected to win Best Animated Picture, but lost to “Flow,” a Latvian film with no dialogue.
Nikki Glazer is a bona fide awards hosting star
From a hilarious monologue to a series of memorable costume changes, Nikki Glazer has earned critical acclaim for her performance as master of ceremonies.
She enlisted Adam Sandler to do his impressions, parodied Wicked and Conclave with a short rendition of a song called “Popular,” and baked in celebrity culture to the delight of viewers and the internet.
It’s a notoriously demanding gig, but the consensus seems to be that she made it.
