What will you watch this weekend?

The last weekend of 2024 has arrived. New Year’s Eve is just a few days away from 2025. A quarter of a century has passed. Time flies! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. Since it’s still winter break, it’s time to take advantage of the cold weather and unwind with some good TV shows and movies.

Every week, I research the best new streaming options and theatrical releases and compile them into this guide. I’ll also talk about ongoing series that are currently airing weekly, but most of the shows I was watching have ended. There are still some new episodes dropping.

If you have any tips or if we missed something, send us a message on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook. You can check out last weekend’s streaming guide here.

forbesWhat to watch this weekend: New shows and movies streaming on Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, Apple TV, and moreby Eric Kane

New and noteworthy information this weekend (12/13/24)

Squid Game – Season 2 (Netflix)

Three years after the first season became a global sensation on Netflix, the second season of The Squid Game is here. It’s still the biggest TV season in Netflix history, beating out Stranger Things 4 and Wednesday by a considerable margin. Season 2 has gotten good reviews, but not as good as season 1. I think some of the novelty has simply worn off for people. All 7 episodes are currently being distributed.

Night Bitch (Hulu)

In a twist on the werewolf tale, Amy Adams plays an exhausted mother with a rambunctious toddler who discovers he can transform into a dog at night. The phrase “motherhood changes you” takes on a whole new meaning here. It’s a pretty weird concept, but I love Addams and she seems to be having fun here.

Doctor Who Holiday Special (Disney+)

As I’ve said before, I’m not a fan of Doctor Who (not because I don’t like it, but because I’ve never been into it), so I have nothing to say about the current Doctor. seasonal and holiday specials. However, Disney+ will have a Christmas-only version of Dr. Who.

Completely Unknown (Theatrical Release)

Timothée Chalamet, who has perhaps been cast too many famous characters from Willy Wonka to Paul Atreides, stars as Bob Dylan, one of the most important singer-songwriters of the 20th century. Elle Fanning plays Sylvie Russo, Monica Barbaro plays Joan Baez, Boyd Holbrook plays Johnny Cash, and Edward Norton plays Pete Seeger. It’s a movie where celebrities play famous people! Interestingly, while critics have given the new James Mangold biopic a 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences have been much more kind, with a Popcornmeter score of 96%.

Nosferatu (inside the theater)

Robert Eggers has made a lot of really great, really weird movies. The last film I saw of his was The Northman, which I really enjoyed (apart from some minor casting mistakes). Nosferatu is a new take on a very old vampire movie, a modern day take on the 1922 film, which I think is a fitting vampire story. Starring Bill Skarsgard and Lily-Rose Depp. Although it looks pretty good, Eggers has a certain style that isn’t always to everyone’s taste. Critics are giving it a 7%, while audiences are a little more skeptical at 76%. One viewer critic said it was “a little too creepy”.

Contents broadcast every week

I’ve finished a lot of books recently, including Dune: Prophecy, which I ended up not caring about and actually having a hard time getting through. In fact, it ranked on our list of worst and most disappointing TV shows of 2024, along with many other series.

Another show that just ended this week is “Shrink.” I really want to write about this because it’s one of the best TV shows right now. The last two episodes both made me cry like a baby. Apple has a lot of great shows, but this is definitely one of my favorites.

When I wrote last week’s guide, I hadn’t started Dexter: Original Sin yet, so I binge-watched all three episodes that were available. I still have to watch the fourth installment, which just came out today, but so far I’m enjoying this prequel series much more than I expected. It feels like old-fashioned Dexter. This is my review. (Paramount)

Star Wars: The Skeleton Crew is exactly the kind of TV show Disney and Lucasfilm should have made about live-action Star Wars, but the ratings show that no one is coming to this fun little adventure show. Suggested. It could be Star Wars fatigue, lack of marketing, or something else. I think this program should have been created and marketed more squarely to boys. Either way, I’m having fun. (Disney Plus)

I’m currently a few episodes behind on Silo (Apple TV), but I’ve been having a hard time getting into it. It feels much slower and less interesting than season 1. Instead, I finished reading Rivals on Hulu/Disney, which I thought was really fun. It’s quite hot and humid! Frankly, I need to catch up on Landman, which is pretty complicated. While Taylor Sheridan’s work often features fairly solid female characters, Landman’s work, especially Billy Bob Thornton’s character’s 17-year-old daughter, seems one-dimensional and oddly sexualized. It feels like.
