Rotten Tomatoes’ early review scores for the final MCU movie in 2024 change the ranking of Marvel TV shows released in the Disney+ era at the bottom, with She-Hulk: The Lawyer ominously missing from the podium. Tatiana Maslany’s 2022 show still has the lowest Rotten Tomatoes ratings at 32%, but critics have given it a higher score of 79% amid speculation about review bombing from users. I added.
What if…? Season 3 ranked in the bottom three of the MCU’s TV shows on Rotten Tomatoes in terms of both critics and audience scores. The current Multiverse show’s initial critics score is 75%, but its audience score is lower at 56%. Only 2024 opener Echo (70%) and Secret Invasion (currently with a critic score of 52%) are behind the lowest-rated MCU films, Secret Invasion (44%) and Secret Invasion (currently with a critic score of 52%).・Hulk” (32%) had a low audience score.
What if…? What does Season 3’s Rotten Tomatoes score mean?
Perhaps due to the timing, or perhaps due to the release method (What If…? Season 3 has been released one episode per day since December 22nd), it only has 12 critic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. It has more than 100 user scores. More results may follow after the season finale as outlets that didn’t have access to the previews run reviews, but early images tend to reflect trends in overall scores.
MCU television shows typically receive very high scores, with an average critic score of 84% and an average audience score of 75%. What if…? Season 3 is currently below the critical high points of X-Men ’97 (99%) and Ms. Marvel (98%), and is falling even further below. The show’s ratings have shown a consistent trend, dropping from 92% in season 1 to 65% in season 2, and currently at 56%, its lowest point to date. Critics have been less consistent, giving season two higher scores than season one.

Some reviews reveal the divisive nature of “What if…?” Season 3. ComingSoon’s review called the series completely “bad,” ComicBookMovie called it “disappointing,” my review for ScreenRant called it “frustrating,” while others like Empire Praising the series as another powerful entry, JoBlo called it a “thrilling ending.” Collider and MovieWeb both gave it a 7 out of 10, and CBR’s episode reviews gave it an average of 8 out of 10.
Audience scores were similarly split, with lower tiers lamenting the focus on “less interesting” characters and failing to capitalize on the conceptual promise of What If…? Masu. Higher scores again focus on entertainment elements, with some highlighting connections to Secret Wars.
Our Take What If…? Season 3 Review Score
What if…? Season 3 certainly has its moments and definitely fulfills its promise of doing something different from the rest of the MCU, but it ignores the real question any MCU fan would be asking. The bold decision to do so ended up hurting some fans and critics. We can’t pass up the chance to see returning characters like Shang-Chi and Moon Knight who feel like we’ve been left out in the cold, but they’re dramatically different versions of what we’re used to, so we don’t really want to miss out on them. Not as satisfying as a substantial return. Again, it’s very likely that the current Rotten Tomatoes score will change after the finale, but it feels right for now.
What if…? is an animated anthology series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, featuring fan-favorite characters such as Peggy Carter, T’Challa, Doctor Strange, Killmonger, and Thor. Directed by Brian Andrews and with AC Bradley as head writer, the new series features signature MCU action with a bizarre twist. The show features Uatu the Watcher, an omnipotent being who observes events in multiple universes as they unfold from afar, but is unable to intervene. But things change when an entity peeks behind the veil and puts the multiverse at risk.
