A bill to sell and ban TikTok has been submitted to Marvell.
In an unexpected side effect of the bill that sent TikTok dark on Saturday night, the digital game Marvel Snap also went offline. The game was developed by American independent game company Second Dinner Studios in collaboration with game publisher Nuverse.
But Nuverse, like TikTok, is owned by Chinese conglomerate ByteDance. Nevertheless, the game’s developers were caught off guard when the game went offline.
“Unfortunately, Marvel Snap is temporarily unavailable in the US app store and is no longer available for play in the US. This outage was a surprise to us and was not planned. ” Second Dinner Studio said in a statement. “Marvel Snap is not going anywhere. We are actively working to get the game out as soon as possible and will update if we have more to share.”
Marvel Snap launched in 2022 to rave reviews (and was nominated for a BAFTA Game Award), and the company says players will be able to “play with the online Marvel Universe using a digital deck of cards with special powers. “Compete with each other.”
When visitors opened the app or visited the Marvel Snap website, they saw a message that the game was “currently not available in your country or region.”
Of course, Marvel is owned by the Walt Disney Co., but the closure of Marvel Snap is unlikely to have a major impact on the company’s bottom line. The company licenses its IP, including characters from Marvel Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, to numerous game developers for a variety of games.
TikTok went dark in the United States on Saturday night as the stock sale bill was about to become law. The app is offline for now, but the company writes: “We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated he is willing to work with us on a solution to bring TikTok back after he takes office. Stay tuned!
President Trump has indicated that he would like to try to revive TikTok, but it is unclear in what capacity and by what means he will do so.
