Smarter AI programs like ChatGpt and Gemini want to use them as more virtual assistants. To do this, we need AIS to access information about us from all kinds of apps and remember the details about us. In addition, companies like Openai and Google need to be more and more trustworthy with personal data.
Openai was the first to bring memory functionality to ChatGpt. It happened with custom instructions, a feature I used since it was available. About a year ago, Openai added memory functionality to ChatGpt, allowing users to remember things from chat beyond the scope of custom instructions. All of this happens with the user’s knowledge and memories can be deleted at any time. Also, if you set your ChatGPT privacy preferences correctly, you won’t train your AI.
Gemini needed more time to get memory features similar to ChatGpt. Google launched its first memory feature in November, but Gemini Advanced Subscribers is available. The ChatGpt memory function can also be used to pay for ChatGpt users.
However, Google has improved Gemini’s memory in ways Openai doesn’t. You can instruct Gemini to remember information from previous chats with AI on similar topics. This is useful for having conversations on the same topic.
“From today, Gemini can now recall past chats and provide more useful responses,” Google said in a blog on Thursday. “Whether you’re asking Gemini questions about something you’ve already discussed or asking Gemini to summarise a previous conversation, Gemini will use the information from the relevant chat to create a response.”
I have custom instructions enabled in ChatGPT and update them from time to time, but I don’t use the memory feature. I don’t completely believe that AI remembers information about me. I don’t mean that providing too much personal information can’t be handed over to AI from the start.
However, Google upgrades for Gemini are necessary for ChatGpt. The ability of ChatGpt to remember some conversations on similar topics certainly helps as it prevents me from having the same chat. It can happen from time to time.
Let me remind you that ChatGpt search gave ChatGpt a major UI overhaul, allowing users to search for previous chats. This makes it a bit easier to remember past conversations, but you’ll have to do it manually. Also, ChatGPT supports folders, so you can combine similar chats with the same folder to streamline your interactions with AI.
Google’s method is better. I would like to tell AI to look at past conversations and find relevant information. This is not necessarily the same as memory functions. This simply provides AI with a twisted and twisted access to my chat data already stored in my account. You will be able to manage the data that AI is looking at.
Google says that’s the case with Gemini:
It manages what information is stored. You can view, delete, or decide how long you want to maintain your chat history. You can also turn off activities in the Gemini app completely by going to my activities. Gemini may indicate that you use past chats with sources and related content.
The new memory feature is available in English and requires Gemini Advanced Subscription via the Google One AI Premium plan. This subscription will give you access to Google Cloud storage, making it a better deal than ChatGpt Plus.
Google Workspace Business and Enterprise subscribers will also acquire features in the coming weeks.
