Changes by the Television Academy allow television directors to submit multiple episodes for Emmy consideration, and also adjust eligibility for guest star categories.
The Academy also introduced two changes for the 2026 Creative Arts Awards related to casting for unscripted programming and main title music.
Under the new directing rules, individuals or directing teams will be able to submit multiple episodes (from different shows) to the directing category at the 2025 Primetime Emmy Awards. Previously, directors could only submit one entry per category, even if they believed they had produced award-worthy work in, say, two drama series in a year.
Changes to guest appearance eligibility will likely only affect a small number of performers. Under the new rules, actors who have previously won or been nominated for an Emmy Award for Best Leading or Supporting Role will not be eligible for guest acting awards for playing the same character on the same series. These actors can still apply in the lead or supporting categories.
Both of these rules will go into effect starting with this year’s 77th Emmy Awards. In 2026, the TV Academy will tighten rules regarding the casting of reality TV and main title music.
On the casting front, the Academy says it will “streamline” the number of casting titles eligible for the Emmy Award, which recognizes outstanding casting for reality television. From the 78th Emmy Awards, Casting By, Casting Executive, Casting Director, Casting Producer, Senior Casting Director, Casting Director, Senior Casting Producer, Casting Producer, Celebrity Casting By. This applies to people with titles. award.
The Academy also said that starting in 2026, the main title theme must be used in at least half of the episodes eligible for an Emmy Award. The Academy further defines a main title theme as “a unique, identifiable musical fingerprint and calling card for a show that draws the audience in by setting the show’s tone and future developments.” .
