Time magazine named President-elect Donald Trump its 2024 Person of the Year, marking the second time he has earned the honor.

Trump was recognized in 2016 and the announcement was made Thursday. Last year, the 2023 title went to pop icon Taylor Swift.

Time has a history of selecting individuals or groups who have contributed the most to shaping the world, for better or for worse. Although several president-elects have earned this title, it is not guaranteed.

For example, in 1952, Queen Elizabeth II was chosen over Dwight D. Eisenhower, and in 1968, the Apollo 8 astronauts, the first humans to orbit the moon, were chosen over President-elect Richard Nixon. It was.

Trump once described Time magazine’s Person of the Year as the “Holy Grail.” Over the years, he has appeared on magazine covers many times, sometimes with less-than-flattering portrayals. When Time selected German Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2015, President Trump publicly expressed his displeasure by tweeting about the decision and mentioning it at a rally. When he was finally selected in 2016, he told NBC’s Today show that he was “very honored.”

Time Editor-in-Chief Sam Jacobs explained exactly why Trump topped the charts: “He ushered in a resurgence of historic proportions, propelled a once-in-a-generation political realignment, and… “For reshaping the American presidency and changing America’s role in the world,” Donald Trump is Time magazine’s 2024 Person of the Year. ”

Despite facing six corporate bankruptcies and multiple criminal cases, he secured the mandate by trampling Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump will become the first convicted felon to take the presidential oath, the first twice to be impeached and, at 78, the oldest person to hold office.

Harris, who would have been the first black president, was among five finalists for Time magazine’s award.
