As the MLB offseason progresses, rumors surrounding Seiya Suzuki are gaining attention, especially with the Los Angeles Dodgers showing interest in the Chicago Cubs outfielder.
However, the Cubs appear reluctant to trade Suzuki even after recently acquiring Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros. The development raises questions about Suzuki’s future with the Cubs and the potential impact on the Dodgers, who are reportedly looking to replace Teoscar Hernandez.
Suzuki, who signed a five-year, $85 million contract with the Cubs before the 2022 season, has proven to be a valuable asset. He posted an .824 OPS in three seasons in MLB.

His consistent performance at the plate makes him a good option for teams looking for a right-handed hitter. The Dodgers face uncertainty with Hernandez potentially leaving in free agency, and have expressed interest in Suzuki as a potential replacement.
Last season, Suzuki played in 132 games and had a batting average of .283, an on-base percentage of .366, and a slugging percentage of .482. He had 73 RBIs, 21 home runs, and 16 stolen bases.
Despite interest from the Dodgers, there are reports that the Cubs have no intention of parting ways with Suzuki because they consider him an important piece of the team.
The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported Thursday that the Cubs are also reluctant to trade Suzuki because it would be difficult to find a replacement.
“The Cubs have no intention of trading Suzuki, even after acquiring right fielder Kyle Tucker, according to a person briefed on the club’s thinking,” Rosenthal wrote. “The Cubs estimate that the market for right-handed hitters is thin. It will be difficult to replace Suzuki, who has posted an .824 OPS in three seasons in the major leagues.”
Chicago Cubs keep Seiya Suzuki and aim to acquire another Japanese player
The Chicago Cubs’ decision regarding Seiya Suzuki will have an impact on their future as they aim to make the playoffs in 2025.
According to Sports Illustrated, the decision not to trade could work in Suzuki’s favor as he is also looking to sign another Japanese player, Roki Sasaki, as an international free agent. The Cubs were also one of the teams that met with Sasaki.
It’s still unclear whether the Cubs will keep Suzuki or let him go. But if the Dodgers bring an attractive offer to the Cubs’ door, it will test their resolve.
