Note from Scott: As 2024 draws to a close, things may seem calm in the industry, but this is just the calm before a very big storm.
New Year’s Day is Wednesday. Exactly one week later, on January 8th, Oscar nomination voting begins (voting ends on January 12th). And between these two dates, the Palm Springs International Film Festival will hold its awards ceremony in the desert (January 3rd), the Golden Globe Awards will be held in Los Angeles (January 5th), and the National Jury The Society will be handing out prizes in New York (January 7th).
This all comes after the Academy announced its 10-nominated finalist list (Netflix’s Emilia Perez received the most mentions with six), and one of the shortlisted original songs, “Better Man” from Paramount Pictures. It has become a hot topic following the disqualification of “Forbidden Road”. Announcement of nominations from the Annie Awards (Universal’s The Wild Robots leads the field) and the Composers and Lyricists Association Awards (no one has received more nominations than Emilia Perez’s music and lyricist team). And box office performers during the Christmas break included Focus’ Nosferatu, Searchlight’s Complete Unknown, and A24’s The Brutalist, which had a very limited release.
62 days left until the 97th Oscar Awards. Buckle up!
PS: Be sure to check out some of the fun items I’ve posted since my last prediction. THR Actors Roundtable this Oscar season. Jude Law, star of the vertical film The Order, and producer of Nosferatu (also director of the first two Home Alone films, Mrs. Doubtfire, and the first two Harry Potter films). An episode of my Awards Chatter Podcast with Chris Columbus. And, although this has nothing to do with awards, here’s my profile of the roller coaster life of the former child actor who played George’s daughter Zuzu Bailey in the 1946 Christmas classic, It’s a Wonderful Life.

My purpose is to accurately predict what will happen, not to advocate what I think should happen. My choices are guided by screening movies, consulting voters, analyzing campaigns, and studying past seasons’ results. It’s stupid to rank something you haven’t seen yet, so I won’t. And my current prediction is…
