Which technology will become more popular: VR, MR, or AR?

We received some frequently asked questions from MIXED readers. Which is the technology of the future: VR, MR or AR? Here’s our answer.

Every Monday, we answer questions from our readers. Send your questions to tomislav@mixed.de with “Question” in the subject line. If I’m lucky, I’ll respond the following Monday.

This week’s question comes from reader Lorenz.

What is the future of VR, MR and AR?

Hello, Mr. Lorenz

That’s a frequently asked question. To answer that, I’d like to first define some terms.

Virtual Reality: When you wear a headset or glasses, you only see the virtual environment displayed on an opaque screen, not the real world. Mixed reality: When you wear a headset or glasses, you see a mix of virtual and physical elements on an opaque screen, with the real world shown using pass-through. Augmented Reality: When you wear a headset or glasses with transparent optics (plastic, glass, silicon carbide), you see the real world overlaid with contextual digital elements or holograms.

My answer to your question is that none of these technologies are the future. VR, MR, and AR represent different types of face computers, coexisting in various hybrids and form factors, some without displays, like the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.

If the tech industry succeeds in bringing to market full-fledged AR glasses that people will want to wear in public, this type of facial computer has the best chance of success. Many practical applications.

span { width: 5px;height: 5px;background-color: #5b5b5b; }#mailpoet_form_11{border-radius: 0px;text-align: left;}#mailpoet_form_11 form.mailpoet_form {padding: 20px;}#mailpoet_form_11{width: 100%;}#mailpoet_form_11 .mailpoet_message {margin: 0;padding: 0 20px;}#mailpoet_form_11 .mailpoet_paragraph.last {margin-bottom: 0} @media (max-width: 500px) {#mailpoet_form_11 {background-image: none;}} @media ( min-width: 500px) { #mailpoet_form_11 .last .mailpoet_paragraph:last-child {margin-bottom: 0}} @media (max width: 500px) {#mailpoet_form_11 .mailpoet_form_column:last-child .mailpoet_paragraph:last-child {margin-bottom: 0}} ) )>

However, this doesn’t mean VR and MR headsets are going away. Because of their larger form factor, which means they can accommodate significantly more technologies, AR glasses have unique advantages and there are use cases that AR glasses cannot or are less likely to achieve.

However, we expect pure VR devices to become increasingly rare and replaced by MR-enabled headsets and glasses that support both VR and MR. And in the meantime, there will be many other types of face computers that we don’t know about yet.

Sincerely,

Tomislav
