WhatsApp for Android is working on an artificial intelligence (AI) feature that will allow users to create personalized AI characters within the app, a feature tracker claims. The new feature is said to be similar to the AI character creation feature available on Instagram and Messenger. The feature tracker claimed that users will be able to describe the chatbot’s personality traits and focus areas using text prompts, and the AI will be able to generate a profile picture and profile. Additionally, the app is currently developing a dedicated tab to display AI characters.
AI characters may be introduced to WhatsApp for Android
According to feature tracker WABetaInfo, the AI character creation feature was discovered in the WhatsApp beta in the Android 2.25.1.26 update. This feature is under development and is currently not available to beta testers. Additionally, feature trackers have also spotted a separate tab for AI characters in the WhatsApp beta in the Android 2.25.1.24 update. This is also a feature that is currently not displayed.

Based on screenshots shared by feature trackers, the AI character creation feature appears to be similar to what exists in other Meta-owned apps. This feature will likely use AI Studio to allow users to create new AI characters from scratch or based on existing templates. In the screenshot shared, it appears that users can enter up to 1,000 characters to describe the characteristics and focus areas of their personalized chatbot.
WhatsApp has also added explanation suggestions at the bottom of the screen to help users get inspiration or a starting point for an explanation. The screenshot shows only step 1 (out of 3), but if the process is similar to AI Studio for Instagram or Messenger, the next steps include image and profile generation and AI chatbot privacy. May include selection of details.
Other screenshots highlight that WhatsApp may also provide a dedicated space for these AI characters by creating a new tab. This tab appears to display all user-created chatbots and all other public AI characters. In particular, it is unclear whether AI bots created on WhatsApp will also appear in other meta apps.
