The last time Night Agent fans saw Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso), his trusty sidekick Rose (Lucien Buchanan) was by his side. But in the Season 2 premiere, Peter takes a romantic stroll with someone else: newcomer Alice, played by Pitch Perfect star Brittany Snow.
As with many twists and turns in The Night Agent, which returns on Jan. 23, things aren’t what they seem. Alice is not Peter’s love interest. She is his new mentor and partner in the high-stakes Night Agent program.
Night Agent creator Sean Ryan hopes Snow’s natural charm will help viewers “immediately form a connection” with the new character. “So even if you’re thinking, ‘Wait a minute, who is this woman holding hands with Peter?’ Where’s Rose? You don’t hate her yet,” he tells Tudam. “You might not think of Brittany Snow when you think of spy thrillers, but I knew she could do it. And she was really competitive.”
Snow needed to be a game that would jump right into the action of The Night Agent Season 2. As seen in the clip above, Alice and Peter’s mission takes a turn into a dangerous one as they stroll through Bangkok, Thailand, tracking the mysterious Warren (Teddy Sears), an American intelligence agent. He is a high-ranking official and they suspect him to be behind the massive information leak. Alice and Peter’s investigation soon brings them face-to-face with some very dangerous people and a weapon-to-arms encounter.
After ending Season 1 with the promise of Peter’s career as a night agent, writer and executive producer Ryan wanted to immerse viewers directly into the adrenaline-pumping drama they’ve come to expect from the series. Ta. “I didn’t want to spend too much time training Peter to be a night agent,” he explains. “What I wanted was a sense of Peter not being at home. Peter lacks natural qualities and is a stranger in a new land.”
Basso said it was “great” to explore Peter’s new position in such a completely new location. “I think Peter is trying to find his footing in this new world he’s living in,” Basso tells Tudam. “He didn’t have time to adjust.” Season 2 picks up about nine months after the harrowing events of the Season 1 finale, when Peter saved President Michelle Travers’ life. In recognition of his heroic deed, he was offered a role in “Night Action”.
“Peter was thrown into training immediately after the Camp David incident. And then he was thrown out onto the field,” Basso says. “He just hasn’t had that moment to breathe, to get used to his surroundings.”
Well, it looks like Peter won’t be taking any time off any time soon. By the end of the premiere clip, Peter is running at full speed through the streets of Bangkok, surrounded by enemies with guns. How will he get out of this latest espionage crisis? Will Alice be able to save him? And what does Rose think of Peter’s latest adventure? To find out, you’ll have to tune into The Night Agent Season 2, which premieres on January 23rd.
