Director Denis Villeneuve has said he has no intention of directing another film in the series beyond the planned Dune: Messiah movie, but that doesn’t mean Warner Bros. will stop producing it.
According to Scooper’s Daniel Lichtman (and corroborated by a report from World of Reel), the studio plans to move forward with at least one more Dune movie and a second TV series.
Although HBO’s Dune: Prophecy wasn’t as well-received as the film, it reportedly did quite well from a ratings standpoint.
While the first two films were hugely successful, the fourth chapter is still going to be somewhat of a surprise considering the direction Frank Herbert’s story took after the second film. Villeneuve has shown little interest in adapting his later novels Children of Dune and God-Emperor of Dune, as he feels the stories are starting to become too “difficult”.
According to a World of Reel source, the filmmaker was “rather irritated by plans that could have expanded the series with or without him.”
