Toy Story 5 director responds to Quentin Tarantino’s complaints

Toy Story 5 director and Pixar legend Andrew Stanton recently responded to director Quentin Tarantino’s complaints about continuing the series.

In an interview with Empire Magazine, Stanton spoke candidly about his concerns that a fifth film would continue to undermine the franchise. In particular, Stanton addressed those who may be unhappy that the series continued beyond 2010’s Toy Story 3, which seemed to end the series definitively.

“So ‘3’ was the end of the Andy era,” Stanton said. “No one is being robbed of a trilogy. You can have a trilogy and not watch another one if you don’t want to. But I love how this world allows us to embrace time and change. There’s no promise that it will stay amber.”

Although Stanton didn’t specifically mention Tarantino by name, the legendary director has been vocal about his love for Toy Story 3 and his insistence that he will never see the fourth movie.

“In the case of Toy Story, the third movie is just great,” Tarantino said in 2024. “This is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. And if you’ve seen the other two, it’s mind-blowing. But the thing is, they made a fourth one three years later or something, and I don’t want to see that. You literally ended the story as perfectly as possible. So, no, I don’t care if it’s good or not. It’s over.”

The synopsis for Toy Story 5 reads, “Toys are back in Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5, and this time toys meet technology. Buzz, Woody, Jessie, and the rest of the gang’s job becomes exponentially more difficult when they face an all-new threat to their playtime.”

Toy Story 5 will be released in theaters on June 19, 2026. There are rumors that more movies are in the works, but at this time there have been no confirmations or announcements about additional Toy Story movies from Disney or Pixar. That said, Pixar filmmaker and chief operating officer Pete Docter recently said that Pixar plans to release one original film, followed by one sequel in the next few years.
