Renowned research scientist Andrei Karpathy has announced his departure from OpenAI for the second time, sparking speculation in the technology community. Karpathy, a leading figure in the field of artificial intelligence, clarified that his decision to resign was not prompted by any particular event or disagreement.
A founding member of OpenAI, Karpathy left the organization in 2017 to join Tesla, where he led the Autopilot team. However, he returned to OpenAI in 2022. During his time at the company, Karpathy gained a huge following on social media platforms and YouTube, where he shared his insights about AI and how it works.
In a statement regarding his retirement, Karpathy highlighted his positive experience at OpenAI, highlighting the strength of his team and the excitement surrounding future projects. He expressed his intention to focus on his personal activities from now on.
“Hello everyone, yes, I left OpenAI yesterday. First of all, nothing ‘happened’ and is not the result of any particular event, issue or drama (although conspiracy theories are very interesting, so… Please keep it up :),” Karpathy said.
“The truth is, working at OpenAI over the past year has been really great. The team is really strong, the people are great, the roadmap is really exciting, and there’s a lot we’re all looking forward to. My immediate plan is to work on a personal project and see what happens. If you’ve been following me for a while, you might have an idea of what that’s like. I don’t know.”
Previously, Karpathy referred to his work as “building something like JARVIS with @OpenAI,” hinting at his involvement in AI assistant-related projects. This reference, drawn from popular culture, emphasizes his vision of creating useful conversational AI systems.
