New Delhi, Jan 9 (PTI) Film director Ram Gopal Varma said on Thursday that his 1998 film ‘Satya’ was made with “honest intuition” rather than clever design, and that “it was a recession-proof film.” This should serve as a lesson to the film industry.” ‘Mad Rush’ announces big-budget and star-driven projects.
The gangster drama, still praised by movie buffs for its executions and treatment, will be re-released in theaters on January 17th. The film, scripted by Saurabh Shukla and Anurag Kashyap, focused on the dark side of the criminal world. JD Chakravarthy essays it through the eyes of the titular character.
In a lengthy post about ”, he said.
“‘Sathya’ was made by honest instinct, not by clever design, and the cult status it has achieved will inspire all current and future film makers, including us, the original makers. This should be a wake-up call for everyone.
“At a time when the entire industry is currently rushing to buy big budgets, expensive VFX, huge sets and superstars, it would be wise for all of us to take another look at Satya and ponder why. It could have been such a huge hit, but without the above conditions… That would be a true homage to ‘Sathya’,” said the 62-year-old director.
Varma said that when they set out to make the film, the team “had no idea what we were making other than a real intuition about the subject matter.”
“In terms of our talent, we only realized each other’s talent after the movie became a cult hit and we heard each other’s talents praised by others,” he said.
Director Varma said that the well-etched characters of Sathya (Chakravarthy), Bhikhu Maatle (Manoj Bajpayee) and Kalu Mama (Shukla) were mostly copied from real-life characters.
“‘Satya’ proved to me that we can’t make great films, but we make them ourselves. None of us who worked on the film could capture the magic of ‘Satya’. The fact that it can never be repeated proves my point above. In short, we didn’t do it.” “Please make ‘Satya’, ‘Satya’ made us,” Varma said, adding that even if they were serious, “we wanted them to make a film for us. ”However, he added that he doesn’t remember a single conversation about the film’s box office prospects.
He said the team had no script and were honest about what they filmed each day.
Varma further stated that they realized that they had not made a gangster film, but a drama about “human beings and the situations they find themselves in, either by force or by chance.”
“And we were just as shocked as the audience at the end result of what we created. I think no parent knows what their child will be like when they grow up. Back to my point.” PTI RB BK RB RB.
