But my guess is that the type of people who loved this movie might not be the same people who score the internet hard enough to review it on Rotten Tomatoes. I also think people underestimate how bankable Anne Hathaway is to the general public.

Idea of You’s biggest competition in 2024 was Road House, an Amazon original starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor, a remake of the original. Roadhouse reportedly drew 50 million viewers, making it the biggest Amazon Original film debut of all time. The Ide of You may not have surpassed that initially, but it seems to have garnered more viewers in the long run. In most people’s opinion, Road House wasn’t a very good movie.
The huge success of The Idea of You raises the question of whether it should have been released in theaters at all. Because the movie went straight from South by Southwest to Amazon Prime a month and a half later. This is the year romantic dramas like Blake Lively’s It Ends with Us grossed $350 million worldwide. I would argue that Lively and Hathaway’s star power is at least comparable, and The Idea of You still seems like the better movie. But I guess we’ll never know what happened.
