Suthir Balaji, an OpenAI researcher turned whistleblower, was found dead in his San Francisco apartment on November 26th. This comes a month after the 26-year-old spoke to the New York Times about the unfair practices of the artificial intelligence (AI) company behind the ChatGPT chatbot. Still’s parents deny the possibility of suicide and insist he was “murdered.” Suteru Balaji’s mother turned to technology mogul and world’s richest man Elon Musk for help after her son’s death.

Mr. Balaji played a key role in litigation against OpenAI by major media outlets such as the New York Times, artists, and copyright owners. OpenAI has been accused of violating copyright laws in its chatbot training. Balaji told The Associated Press that he would “try to testify” in the copyright infringement case. He was named in court documents by The New York Times’ lawyers as someone who may have “unique and relevant documents” to support the case.

What the police said about Suteru Balaji’s case

Balaji’s mother Poornima Rao expressed her concerns in a post, saying, “A private autopsy has not confirmed the cause of death as announced by the police.” He called for the intervention of U.S. authorities, saying an FBI investigation was needed to address the issue. Besides Elon Musk, she tagged American biotech entrepreneur and politician Vivek Ramaswami and California Governor Gavin Newsom. Balaji’s parents claim his death was a “cold-blooded murder”.

The post has since gained attention and sparked a wave of reactions on social media. This drew attention from Musk, who responded, “I don’t think it was suicide.”

Suteru Balaji’s mother further implored, “@elonmusk please support us.”

In an interview with Business Insider last week, Rao revealed that Balaji had become increasingly disillusioned with artificial intelligence (AI), particularly OpenAI, as it moved toward commercialization with ChatGPT. “He felt that AI was harmful to humanity,” she says, explaining how her son Suthir Balaji went from boundless optimism about AI’s potential to deep skepticism. did. Reflecting on his tragic death, she added: “It doesn’t seem like a normal situation.”

Was Still planning legal action against OpenAI?

The family also revealed that Still had a document outlining his accusations and legal strategy. “He was ready to go public in a big way,” his mother said. Still’s parents became worried after not hearing from him for several days and called the police, who discovered his body in his apartment. Ms Poornima expressed doubts about the circumstances of his death, claiming that key details were “inconsistent”.

The family also noticed unusual activity on his devices after his death, including temporary files appearing in Google Chrome and Google Drive on November 29, two days after his body was discovered.
