Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday expressed his “deepest condolences” to Chinese President Xi Jinping over the devastating earthquake in Tibet that killed at least 95 people.
In a message posted by the Kremlin, Putin told Xi: “Russia shares the grief of those who lost relatives and loved ones in this natural disaster and hopes for a speedy recovery.”
An earthquake in China’s remote region of Tibet killed at least 95 people and destroyed “many buildings,” state media reported, with shaking felt in neighboring Nepal’s capital Kathmandu and parts of India.
According to the China Earthquake Network Center (CENC), a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 occurred at 9:05 a.m. in Tingri province, near the Nepal border. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake as a magnitude 7.1.
Message from Moscow Times:
Dear readers
We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia’s Prosecutor General’s Office has designated the Moscow Times as an “undesirable” organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows the previous unfair labeling of “foreign agents.”
These actions are a direct attempt to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim that our activities “discredit the decisions of the Russian leadership.” We are seeing things differently. We strive to provide accurate and unbiased coverage of Russia.
We Moscow Times journalists refuse to be silent. But we need your help to continue our work.
