“Everyone wants a return on investment.”
Girls Will Be Girls, Shuchi Talati’s directorial debut, tells the story of a high school girl who struggles to balance her time between school and her first love while navigating a complicated bond with her mother. Regarding the lack of support for the film from financiers, Ali recalls, “When we were working on making the film, we reached out to different people. Everyone wanted their money back. I know what you’re thinking, “This is an investment.” Big movies have the best stars, and you know something’s coming back here. I don’t know the fate of the movie. ”
But the actor-turned-producer is happy he stuck with the project. “We were just finding our footing in world cinema, so we’re going to have those issues going forward, but we’re happy to be able to support a script like this.”
“Bollywood is a fantasy world”
When the first trailer of the film was released on YouTube, many said that “mainstream Bollywood” would never touch a subject like this. Richa says, “I feel that Bollywood itself is very imaginary. The 15 families between Bandra and Goregaon think of themselves as Bollywood. But in reality, it is geographically It’s not a place. It’s the Hindi film industry and it’s changing and evolving. It’s always changing and evolving.”
It’s also a sign of change that mainstream streaming platforms like Amazon Prime Video are giving movies such prominent space, she argues. “In some ways, it’s also a sign that things are changing for big platforms to become home to films like this. And of course, yes, it helps that we have an attachment to it. ” says Richa.
Girls Will Be Girls stars Preeti Panigrahi, Kani Kusruti and Kesab Binoy Kirron.
