New Delhi: Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at her North Block office on Saturday night.

The meeting will be held a few days before the end of Das’ current term as central bank governor and the day after the monetary policy meeting.

Das has been RBI Governor for six years, and his term ends on December 10.

Sources said the meeting between Das and Sitharaman lasted about 30 minutes.

It is still unclear whether it may be extended beyond December 10th.

If granted the extension, Das would become the longest-serving central bank governor since Benegal’s Rama Rau, who held the post for seven-and-a-half years from 1949 to 1957. Shaktikanta Das, an experienced bureaucrat, previously served as Secretary, Ministry of Revenue. and the Department of Economic Affairs of the Ministry of Finance. He was appointed as the 25th central bank governor on December 12, 2018, and his term of office was extended to 2021. Before becoming the central bank governor, he served as a member of the 15th Finance Committee and was India’s G20 Sherpa. He has over 40 years of experience in governance and has held senior positions in both central and state governments across sectors such as finance, taxation, industry and infrastructure.

During his tenure at the Finance Ministry, Das was closely involved in the preparation of eight federal budgets. He is a postgraduate student at St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi.
