Plans for Dubai’s first flying taxi station, a future public transport system, have been approved by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).
Plans by Skyports Infrastructure for the technical design of Dubai International Vertiport (DXV) were approved on Thursday 9 January.
Adjacent to Dubai International Airport, Dubai International Vertiport will be the first of four Skyport Vertiports to open in Dubai. It is also the UAE’s first commercial vertiport.
Vertiport is expected to break ground in late 2024 and begin commercial air taxi operations in 2026.
GCAA Director-General Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi said the approval “advances the UAE’s leadership in introducing innovative aviation solutions”.
He added that the project “represents our commitment to building a safe, secure and future-ready infrastructure.”
“GCAA is proud to play a central role in delivering innovative projects that redefine urban mobility and set global benchmarks for integrating emerging aviation technologies. ” he said.
Skyports CEO Duncan Walker said: “What we are doing in Dubai, and driving elsewhere, will completely rethink how people move within cities and between regions.
“This has all been made possible through the development of new regulatory frameworks and guidelines that ensure a compliant, secure and scalable approach to aviation infrastructure.”
Tourist attractions could benefit from flying taxis
He added: “Today, in collaboration with the GCAA, we reached an important milestone for our flagship DXV facility, bringing us closer than ever to commencing commercial air taxi operations.”
Dubai is home to many theme parks and attractions, including Global Village, Motiongate Dubai, Legoland Dubai, Atlantis Aquaventure, and IMG World of Adventure.
The wider UAE, and Abu Dhabi in particular, is home to world-class theme parks such as Ferrari World, Yas Waterworld, Warner Bros. World and SeaWorld.
With flying taxis on the horizon, attraction operators may begin to consider investing in transportation solutions to attract more guests in a convenient way.
