Netflix has replaced Subservience in its top 10 movie list with something that’s probably far better than Megan Fox’s android thriller. That would be “It Ends With Us,” a huge hit based on the Colleen Hoover novel starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni.
The movie instantly rocketed to number one on the list, and in fact, is Netflix’s best new movie, but this time we should listen to the viewers and not the critics. It Ends With Us only has a score of 55% from critics, but a very high score of 90% from viewers. That score and word of mouth made the film one of the year’s biggest box office surprises, grossing $350 million worldwide, with $200 million of that coming from overseas.
While the film may have sounded like a romantic comedy at first, it’s actually a pretty dark exploration of the increasingly abusive relationship between Lively and Baldoni over the course of the film. Here’s an overview:
“The first film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel, ‘It Ends With Us’ tells the story of a woman who overcomes a traumatic childhood to start a new life in Boston and pursue her lifelong dream of opening her own business. , tells the story of Lily Bloom, whose chance encounter with charming neurosurgeon Lyle Kincaid forms a strong bond. As the two fall deeply in love, Lily begins to see a side of Lyle that reminds her of her parents’ relationship with Lyle, when Lily’s first love, Atlas Corrigan, suddenly returns to her life. The relationship is turned upside down and Lily finds herself having to learn to rely on her own strength to make impossible choices for her future.
What generated a lot of interest and buzz about the film was the reported real-life feud between Blake Lively and star/director Justin Baldoni, a dramatic press tour, and an Instagram photo that sparked a lot of interest and buzz. It was characterized by people not following and negative and aggressive press comments. Needless to say, no matter how successful this was, it seems unlikely that the two will team up again. The film reportedly cost $350 million out of a $25 million budget, a huge hit in the superhero-filled Hollywood landscape.
Colleen Huber is a very popular author, so I’m sure other books will be adapted in the future. I’m not sure why it took me this long to dive into her collection, but there are easily over a dozen options to adapt from here. Next up is Verity, starring Anne Hathaway, about a woman who gets into a car accident and is unable to finish her novel. The other is an adaptation of Reminders of Him, which is reportedly set for release in early 2026. If It Ends With Us is any indication, I’m sure there will be more blockbusters to come, with her and whoever stars and directs.
