Microsoft has created a new engineering group led by Jay Parikh to build AI tools. Microsoft expects AI agents to fundamentally change application development. The new CoreAI Platform and Tools Group brings together various AI teams and builds GitHub Copilot.
Microsoft has created a new engineering organization to be responsible for building artificial intelligence platforms and tools, CEO Satya Nadella said in an email to employees Monday morning.
The new group will be led by former Facebook engineering chief Jay Parikh, who Nadella added to Microsoft’s senior leadership team in October.
Microsoft is creating this group because we anticipate that AI, and specifically AI agents, will fundamentally change the way applications are built and used.
“2025 will see model-forward applications that reshape every application category,” Nadella wrote in an email that was also posted on Microsoft’s blog. “More than any previous platform migration, all layers of the application stack are affected, similar to when the GUI, internet servers, and cloud-native databases are all introduced to the app stack at the same time. The changes have been compressed into three ” years! ”
The company announced that a new group called CoreAI Platform and Tools will include Microsoft’s development arm and AI platform team and will be responsible for building GitHub Copilot. AI-related teams from Chief Technology Officer Kevin Scott’s office will also join the new group, including AI Supercomputers, AI Agentic Runtimes, and Engineering Thrive.
Parikh worked at Facebook for more than a decade. He helped build and maintain the company’s extensive technology infrastructure, a network of expensive data centers with thousands of computers spanning multiple continents.
As one of Mark Zuckerberg’s top lieutenants, Parikh spearheaded a variety of ambitious efforts, including internet connectivity and an ultimately abandoned internet drone project.
At Microsoft, Parikh’s new report includes Eric Boyd, corporate vice president of AI platforms. Jason Taylor, Deputy CTO of AI Infrastructure. Julia Lewson, President of Development. Tim Bozarth, corporate vice president of developer infrastructure.
The email also said Parikh will work closely with Scott Guthrie, head of cloud and AI. Rajesh Jha, Experiences and Devices Leader. Charlie Bell, head of security. Consumer AI CEO Mustafa Suleiman. And Mr. Scott, CTO.
