New data shows a significant increase in usage of the Meta AI mobile app for iOS and Android. The number of daily active users for the app across both platforms jumped to 2.7 million as of October 17, up from about 775,000 just four weeks ago, according to new analysis from market intelligence provider Similarweb. In addition, Meta AI’s app installs are also increasing, reaching 300,000 new downloads per day, up from less than 200,000 per day a few weeks ago.
For comparison, one year ago, on October 17, 2024, Meta AI’s apps had just 4,000 downloads per day.
The company says it found no significant correlation between search and advertising estimates, but Meta points out that there may be promotions on Facebook and Instagram that are not captured by its models.
However, there is another possible explanation for this sharp rise. That’s because Meta’s new Vibes feed launched in September, bringing AI-generated short-form videos to the Meta AI mobile app.
Meta AI introduced the Vibes feed on September 25th. This correlates with the sharp increase in the app’s daily active users on iOS and Android, as seen in the graph below.
Recently, OpenAI’s video generator Sora made headlines after its app rose to the top of the App Store as users rushed to try out the new technology. However, meta AI may also benefit from this release. Similarweb says its data doesn’t prove causation, but it’s possible that the attention on Sora prompted some people to try out meta-AI to compare the two experiences.
Another possibility is that the meta may be benefiting from Sora’s invite-only status. This means that those who weren’t able to try the OpenAI app may have been looking for an alternative app to experiment with. This would be an interesting explanation, as it suggests that OpenAI’s decision to gatekeep Sora may have directly boosted its rival.
