Although the show was a hit, Depp resented the publicity he received as a teenager. In 1990 he left the series, John Waters Crybaby and Tim Burton’s “Edward Scissorhands,” two films by maverick directors that showed off Depp’s range. Scissorhands began a long relationship between actor and director, with Depp appearing in other Burton films, including Ed Wood (1994) and Sleepy Hollow (1999). Depp married the actress in 2015 Amber Heard and their turbulent marriage became tabloid fodder. Heard specifically accused him of physically assaulting her and claimed that he had a substance abuse problem. The pair divorced in 2016, but two years later, Ms. Heard wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post claiming that she was a “public figure representing domestic violence.” In 2018, British newspaper The Sun called Depp a “wife beater.” He sued the paper for defamation, and the case concluded in 2020, with the judge ruling against Mr. Depp, stating, “I accept that Mr. Depp posed a risk to (Heard’s) life.” did. During this time, Depp also sued Heard for libel over an article in the Post. She in turn countersued, claiming that Depp defamed her when one of his lawyers claimed his abuse of her was a hoax. The televised trial began in April 2022 and became something of a media circus. The trial was particularly popular on social media. After six weeks of testimony (which included both sides accusing each other of domestic violence), the jury found that Heard acted with “actual malice” and ruled in Depp’s favor in Depp’s case. I put it down. Depp was awarded $15 million in compensatory and punitive damages, but the judge reduced the amount to $10.35 million. The jury also found that Heard had been defamed by Depp’s lawyers, but she did not prevail on the other two charges. She was awarded $2 million in damages.
