Among the players to watch in MLB this year is St. Louis Cardinals star Nolan Arenado. Although still under contract with Card, experts and insiders say Platinum Glover is exploring a break from The Rue.
On the latest episode of The Baseball Insiders podcast, MLB Insider Robert Murray talked about Arenado’s chances on the market this year. He said if he doesn’t get a move to the Boston Red Sox, he’ll probably be stuck in St. Louis for the time being.

Murray was linked to the eight-year, $260 million contract Nolan Arenado signed in 2019 when he was still a member of the Colorado Rockies. The contract expires in 2027.

In December 2024, there were reports that the Houston Astros wanted to trade Arenado, as club executive Alex Bregman chose to test the free agent market. However, the move was quickly scrapped after the Cardinals star stated he did not want to be traded to Houston.
Insider Robert Murray theorizes Nolan Arenado could stay in St. Louis
Murray joined co-host Adam Weinrib to further discuss other options the multiple-time All-Star would have if his move to Boston falls through.
“If the Red Sox don’t do it, he might end up staying with the Cardinals. Even (agent) Joel Wolfe said he’s in a good situation in St. Louis,” Murray added.
While it’s true to some degree that they’re in a good place, the Cardinals lost former National League MVP Paul Goldschmidt to the New York Yankees. The Cards appeared in the postseason in the first two seasons since Arenado arrived in 2021.
However, the past two years have been difficult. The team finished last in the National League Central Division in 2023, and missed the playoffs last season despite posting a winning record.
Arenado himself had a somewhat disappointing 2024 season. Despite hitting .272, the slugger hit just 16 home runs, his lowest total in a full season since 2014. Additionally, Arenado failed to win either a Gold Glove or an All-Star award for the first time in a game in which he achieved brilliance. career.
