If President Putin takes a major step forward, the Taliban may be recognized. Do you know about Russia's plans?

Russia has voted in favor of a parliamentary bill to remove the Taliban from the list of banned terrorists, moving a step closer to recognizing the Taliban government in Afghanistan.

Relations between Russia and Talban have improved in recent months. The move is seen as Russia’s approach to strengthen ties with the Taliban government. In July, President Vardimir Putin referred to the Taliban as an ally against terrorism.

According to the news agency, Russia’s lower house of parliament approved the bill on its first three mandatory readings. If Russia were to establish diplomatic relations with the Taliban, it would be a major development in the South Asian region.

US-led forces have withdrawn from Kabul after 20 years of war. This paved the way for the Taliban to seize power in Afghanistan. Since then, the Taliban has made several attempts to establish relations with other countries, including India, Russia, and China. It now appears that Russia may recognize the Taliban government.

Even Russia is moving closer to repairing relations with the Taliban, who were once each other’s biggest enemies. The Soviet Union attacked Afghanistan in 1979, leading to a long war between the two countries that lasted for years. Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev then ordered the withdrawal of troops in 1989.
