It’s been a disappointing offseason so far for the Toronto Blue Jays and their fans, to say the least. Not only did the Jays come off a tough 2024 season in which they finished last in the American League East, but they also struggled to attract notable free agents this offseason.
The Blue Jays have been linked to nearly every high-profile free agent this offseason, including Juan Soto and Corbin Burnes. But they missed all of that. The offseason struggles have some fans wondering what the team has planned for the 2025 season.

Despite the uncertainty among the team’s fan base, there are some fans who have not lost their passion for the team. It’s NBA star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. During the postgame press conference, the Oklahoma City Thunder guard was asked about his MLB All-Star Game jacket and whether he is a baseball fan. The Toronto native immediately gave a shoutout to his hometown club.
When Gilgeous-Alexander was asked if he liked baseball, he replied, “I love baseball. Go to the Blue Jays.”
Toronto-born Gilgeous-Alexander developed into one of the NBA’s top players in OKC. Gilgeous-Alexander continues to elevate himself as a player with NBA MVP potential, but even during the Blue Jays’ offseason disappointment, he hasn’t forgotten where he came from.
Gilgeous-Alexander continued to express his Canadian roots throughout his career, playing for Canada at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Given how much he means to the nation as a whole, it may not be long before Shai Gilgeous-Alexander throws out a ceremonial first pitch before a Blue Jays game.
Not only Thunder superstars are famous Jays fans, but stars like Drake, Justin Bieber, Shania Twain, and WWE legend Bret Hart all share their love for the team.
Toronto Blue Jays enter 2025 season with uncertainty over top star
Regardless of which big names support the team, the front office will need to take care of some important work regarding the team’s current composition. Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. could become unrestricted free agents at the end of the 2025 season, which could have a dramatic impact on the franchise.
Both players have been linked with trade rumors and could potentially sign large contract extensions or new deals in free agency. If Toronto wants to continue gaining more fans while retaining big-name backers like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, they’ll need to sort out the current situation.
