Hundreds of live fish being transported through northern Germany died late Friday in a traffic accident caused by slippery roads.
German authorities reported multiple accidents in the area amid snowfall from Friday night into early Saturday morning.
Hundreds of fish littered the road.
One accident in particular was particularly tragic.
A truck carrying around 7,100 live fish collided with two other trucks and a car on the A1 motorway between Bremen and Hamburg. Four people were injured in the accident, including one passenger who was seriously injured.
The Sitensen Fire Department said the collision was “particularly serious.”
“Thousands of fish were found lying on roads and gutters,” the fire department said. “All help came too late for the animals. The animals died at the scene of the accident.”
Police said the collision caused about 200,000 euros ($206,270) worth of damage.
Several other accidents were also reported in northern Germany due to slippery road conditions.
Police in Verden, near Bremen, reported around 20 accidents, while authorities in Peine, between Hannover and Braunschweig, reported 17.
