We’ve been seeing reports since earlier this year suggesting that Apple was planning to enter the smart home camera market, and now Bloomberg’s Mark Garman is shedding more light on Cupertino’s next big bet. Apple is reportedly ready to launch the first smart doorbell with Face ID support in late 2025.

A smart doorbell uses Face ID scanning to automatically unlock your door, according to a new report. Apple has developed its own wireless networking chip called Proxima. This ensures that all Face ID-related images are processed locally on your device. The new devices will back up data to iCloud, which could be a great way for Apple to increase subscription revenue.
It remains to be seen whether Apple will also offer a smart lock system with a camera or partner with a third-party smart home lock manufacturer’s product that is compatible with HomeKit. Apple is expected to opt-in to the Thread smart home standard. Garman said Apple’s smart doorbell camera is still in the early stages of development.
Amazon Ring and Google Nest smart doorbell
Apple’s smart doorbell camera will be joined by a smart home hub similar to Google’s Nest Hub and Amazon’s Echo Hub devices. Apple is also rumored to be launching a custom new operating system with a 6-inch touchscreen on its Smart Hub devices, Apple Intelligence integration, smart home controls, and FaceTime support. There are also rumors that Apple will introduce updated Apple TV and HomePod Mini devices next year.
