“Mr Elon Musk is an American citizen and should probably focus on issues on the other side of the Atlantic,” Health Minister Andrew Gwynne told LBC radio on Friday.
Gwynne was responding to Musk’s harsh criticism of the British authorities’ response to child sexual exploitation.
Mr Musk slammed Labor for rejecting a national inquiry into child abuse in the north of England and launched a full-scale attack on Prime Minister Keir Starmer over his record as the country’s top prosecutor.
Musk wrote on his social media site X: “In the UK, serious crimes such as rape require approval from the Crown Prosecution Service for police to prosecute suspects. At a time when rape gangs were allowed to exploit young girls without facing justice; Who was the head of CPS? Keir Starmer, 2008-2013.”
Calls for an investigation into so-called “rape gangs” were taken up Thursday by Britain’s main opposition party, the Conservative Party, which voted to resign after 14 years in July and similarly called for a national inquiry. I refused.
In a speech Friday, Mr. Gwynne disputed Mr. Musk’s explanation of the issue. He highlighted a series of local investigations into child sexual exploitation, alongside a broader national investigation reported in 2022.
