A fourth installment in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune series is reportedly in development at Warner Bros. Pictures.
Dune 4 is officially in development, according to a new Patreon post by Daniel Richtman. However, Villeneuve previously confirmed that he would not return after the third film in the series, Dune: Messiah, which is expected to begin production soon.

“Dune: Messiah” is reportedly scheduled to begin filming in August 2025. Villeneuve’s sequel is based on Frank Herbert’s 1969 novel. The story follows Paul Atreides, now Emperor Mu’ad’Dib, as he navigates his way to great power while battling political enemies and intrigues within his inner circle. As the House of Atreides teeters on the brink of collapse, real danger comes for Paul’s lover Chani and her unborn heir.
In an interview with Deadline, Villeneuve revealed that his “hiatus” is over and that he’s set on filming the third installment, which immerses himself deeply into the world of Frank Herbert’s Dune. I’ll go back behind the scenes.” “I’m in the writing zone right now,” the filmmaker said, referring to Dune: Messiah, although he was careful not to call it Dune: Part 3.
Villeneuve said, “This story is set about 12 years after we parted ways with the characters at the end of the second part. This time their journey and story are different. That’s why I always feel that although it’s the same world, But it’s a new movie with a new situation.”

Villeneuve’s Dune film series is now a $1 billion film franchise. The first film, released in 2021, starred Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Oscar Isaac, Stellan Skarsgard, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem. It grossed more than $400 million worldwide and won six Academy Awards, including Best Cinematography and Best Original Score. Dune: Part 2, released in 2024, grossed $714.4 million worldwide.
The film will be produced by Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures.
