Disney didn’t need Marvel to beat Warner Bros. and Paramount to make $6 billion box office history

Disney Studios is back at the top of this year’s box office. With worldwide box office revenue of more than $6 billion, the studio surpassed other major studios such as Warner Bros. and Paramount in 2025. Notably, this is the fifth time Disney has reached the $6 billion milestone, following in 2019, 2018, 2017, and 2016.

Unlike previous years, Disney didn’t need the massive backing of Marvel films to reach the top of the box office. Marvel Studios projects of the year performed poorly compared to the previous year, with Fantastic Four: First Steps achieving the highest numbers. The film grossed $521 million, the highest of the three Marvel movies released this year.

Of the $6 billion paid for Disney films, $2.3 billion came from the domestic market. The Disney film collected $3.65 billion at the international box office. Warner Bros. surprisingly came in second at the box office in 2025 with $4.3 billion.

In 2019, Disney’s box office revenue reached $13.1 billion, marking the first time the studio’s annual box office revenue exceeded $10 billion. At the time, the studio’s biggest collection was Avengers: Endgame.

Disney’s highest-grossing movies of the year

Fans should be thankful that two major children’s films have helped Disney reach $6 billion in box office revenue. Walt Disney Animation’s “Zootopia 2” and the live-action remake of “Lilo & Stitch” were the two Disney movies this year to surpass $1 billion in box office revenue.

In addition to Fantastic Four, Marvel movies such as Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts* have earned hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office. Anthony Mackie’s film grossed $415.1 million, but the antihero drama’s box office gross was less than Cap’s $382.4 million.

The studio raked in $483.3 million to jump to $6 billion on the back of Avatar: Fire and Ash. The film is currently being produced by 20th Century under Disney’s broader regime. Below are the highest-grossing films out of the 16 released by the studio.

Zootopia 2 – $1.289 billion Lilo & Stitch – $1.038 billion Fantastic Four: First Steps – $521.9 million Avatar: Fire & Ash – $483.3 million Captain America: Brave New World – $415.1 million Thunderbolts* – $382.4 million Snow White – $205.7 million Predator: Badlands – $184 million Elio – $154 million Freakier Friday – $153.2 million Tron: Ares – $142.2 million

Some of these films did not perform well at the box office or were huge failures, but they did contribute to the numbers. That number will continue to rise as James Cameron’s Avatar continues to be a box office success.

Warner Bros. came in second despite being on sale.

Warner Bros. did well in theaters this year after a slump last year. WB’s films this year set a rare record with seven consecutive films grossing over $40 million at the box office. Interestingly, the year didn’t get off to a great start, as the films Mickey 17 and Altonites cost the studio $110 million in losses.

But it bounced back with the performance of films like The Minecraft Movie, F1 and Superman, beating out other studios like Universal and Paramount. Franchise Entertainment Research analyst David A. Gross told Variety: “The studio made a good choice and took a big creative risk, and it’s paying off.” WB’s highest-grossing films include:

Minecraft Movie – $958.1 million F1: The Movie – $631.6 million Superman – $616.8 million The Conjuring: The Last Rites – $494.6 million Sinners – $367.9 million Final Destination: Bloodlines – $315.8 million Weapons – $269 million

WB’s highest-grossing film of the year was A Minecraft Movie. The film ranks fourth on the list of this year’s highest-grossing films, behind Ne Zha 2, Zootopia 2, and Lilo & Stitch. Universal’s “Jurassic World: Rebirth” came in fifth place.
