Cristiano Ronaldo celebrated after FIFA officially announced Portugal and five other countries as hosts of the 2030 Men’s World Cup. He believes this unique tournament will be something very special.
“A dream come true,” he wrote on social media, along with an image captioned “The most special World Cup ever.”
This will be the first World Cup to be co-hosted by six countries. Spain, Portugal and Morocco are the main host countries. South American teams Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay will each host one match. This format commemorates the 100th anniversary of the first World Cup, held in Uruguay in 1930.
“Portugal will host the 2030 World Cup and be proud of us,” he wrote in Portuguese.
Ronaldo is the only player to score in five World Cups. However, it is unlikely that he will still be playing in 2030.
FIFA formally approved the six-nation bid at a congress in Zurich on Wednesday. At the same meeting, Saudi Arabia was also officially recognized as the host country for the 2034 World Cup.
The reaction in Spain and Portugal was muted, partly because the result was largely expected. However, South America’s governing body CONMEBOL celebrated the decision. “FIFA has decided to respect history. The World Cup is coming home.”
CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez said it was a historic day for South American football.
“We are at home on the continent that hosted the first ever World Cup. The first World Cup was held in Uruguay, the first world champion country, and now we also have Argentina, the defending World Cup champions. Masu.”
The 2030 World Cup will be a significant milestone as it will span six countries on three continents for the first time. European countries will bear the brunt of the hosting obligation, but the symbolic gesture of Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay taking part will have even greater historical significance.
