‘Carry On’ ranks among the top 5 most-watched movies of all time on Netflix

‘Carry On’ has made it to Netflix’s most popular English language movie list.

The action thriller reached No. 5 on Tuesday with 149.5 million views since its release a month ago, the streamer said. ‘Red Notice’ currently tops the list, followed by ‘Don’t Look Up’, ‘The Adam Project’, ‘Bird Box’ and ‘Carry On’.

“More than the numbers, it’s how people react to this film,” director Jaume Collet-Serra told me Tuesday morning. “I started getting a lot of calls and texts from friends and people who didn’t know I directed it. They didn’t realize until they saw the credits and they texted me saying they loved it. I think in that moment I knew this film had found an audience and was connecting with an audience.”

“Carry On” stars Oscar nominee Taron Egerton as a TSA officer at LAX who is blackmailed by a mysterious tourist (Jason Bateman) and forced to carry a package containing chemical weapons onto a flight to New York. Sofia Carson will also appear as Egerton’s pregnant fiancée. Rounding out the cast are Daniel Deadwyler, Theo Rossi, Dean Norris, and Tonatiu.

The film was produced by Dylan Clark and Amblin Entertainment and written by TJ Fixman.

Collet-Serra insists she would be fine even if the film was never released in theaters. “We made it exactly the same way we’ve made all our theatrical movies,” he said. “‘Nonstop’ was a great piece of theater, but if you made it now, would it be a play? Probably not. It’s in the era, so I’m happy. In any case, it would be great if it could find an audience. But there was nothing technically or visually different from doing it any other way.”

Collet-Serra insists there have been no formal discussions about a sequel yet. “There are no plans for a sequel,” he said. “But if audiences want a sequel, families want a sequel, and we have an idea that inspires and faithfully recreates the original, then maybe we’ll do something. But now There are no plans.”

Clark added, “We don’t have any plans, but it’s fun to talk about these things quietly. These characters are great. If you look at Danielle Deadwyler’s character (Detective Elena Cole), I think there’s a movie about her. You will understand a certain world.”

“Carry On is a return to the great, original action films of the 80s and 90s that we all love, and we’re thrilled to make this film as a homage to the best films of the genre. “It’s clear that audiences love this movie and we’re thrilled that it’s on the list of Netflix’s most popular movies of all time,” Dan Lin, chairman of Netflix’s film division, said in an exclusive statement to Variety. said. “Congratulations to Jaume, Dylan, the Amblin Entertainment team, and the entire cast and crew.”

Egerton said this during an appearance on the Just for Variety podcast in December. ”

Egerton told me shortly before the film’s release that a sequel was in the works. “Honestly, I didn’t think much of it until this morning, because this movie is all lightning bolts, but I guess that didn’t stop Die Hard,” he said. spoke. “I think it turned out great, and I’m open to anything. I’m still the kind of person who treats any job as the last. When I hear of a sequel, I get a kick out of it.”
