Then-UFC heavyweight challenger Brendan Schaub felt he could outdo one of the best fighters of all time until Joe Rogan intervened shortly after a lopsided loss.
Before starting his comedy and podcasting career, Brendan Schaub was a rising heavyweight star on the UFC roster. After reaching the finals of The Ultimate Fighter 10, Schaub had a modest career in the Octagon, scoring knockout wins over legendary Mirko Cro Cop and Chris Tuscheler.
Schaub showed signs of being a potential title challenger early in his time in the UFC, but he never quite lived up to the huge hype he attracted at TUF 10. He had lost four of his last six fights, including brutal KO losses to Ben Rothwell and Antonio. Rodrigo Nogueira.
After a head injury loss to Andrei Arlovski at UFC 174, Schaub faced Travis Browne in a title eliminator match at UFC 181. Just minutes into the match, Brown responded to Schaub’s pre-fight taunts and trash talk by choking Schaub with ground-and-pound strikes.
Despite his losing streak, Schaub exuded deep confidence in himself on an episode of The Fighter and the Kid with guest Joe Rogan. The episode aired a few days after UFC 181, but quickly became an intervention as Rogan and co-host Brian Callen encouraged Schaub to retire.
Not only did Schaub initially resist Logan and Karen, he also claimed to “shock” people in a wrestling match with then-UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez. It took only a few seconds for Logan to brutally shut down Schaub’s story.

“If you had a wrestling match with Cain Velasquez, how well do you think it would go? I think you’d be surprised, he would mess you up,” Rogan said to Schaub’s face. Ta.
Logan went on to explain to Schaub that he did not have the skill set necessary to compete with the best heavyweights in the world at the time, including Velasquez. When Logan dissected Schaub’s career and encouraged him to stop fighting, it was an uncomfortable moment for Schaub, Logan, Karen, and the viewers.
Towards the end of the episode, Schaub hinted at the possibility of moving down to light heavyweight for his next fight. But a few months later, he announced his retirement from martial arts during an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience and hasn’t looked back since.
Schaub finished his professional MMA career with a 10-5 record inside the cage. Prior to his MMA debut, Schaub was a college football standout at the University of Colorado and briefly signed with a team in the Arena Football League.

Schaub had been linked to a possible return to Jorge Masvidal’s Gamebred bare-knuckle MMA promotion before matchup talks stalled. After turning down a bare-knuckle offer, Schaub has been feuding with Nate Diaz and has hinted he might compete in a grappling match.
Although his career as a comedian was short-lived, Schaub became a star in podcasting and still co-hosts TFATK with Karen. He also has his own production company and hosts numerous shows, including an MMA analysis podcast.
Logan and Schaub have been friends for years, and Schaub has appeared on Logan’s podcast multiple times over the past year. He is a frequent guest on Logan’s Fight Companion Show, giving live reactions to some of the UFC’s biggest fight cards.
TFATK’s unpleasant “Intervention” episode featuring Logan and Schaub is still hotly debated. However, Logan thwarted the possibility of Schaub cruelly recognizing Velasquez’s greatness and wrestling ability.
