Even though this star had more hit songs than Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, he was never called a ‘superstar’ for academic reasons.
There are several parameters to measure a leading star’s success in the film industry. Some may argue that the actors who earn the most box office revenue are the most successful. However, this is unfair to the superstars of yesteryear, as inflation means that today even modest films can earn more than the all-time box office grosses of the ’70s and ’80s. Some argue that the actor with the most hits has the right to be called the most successful actor. Following that logic, one “underrated” star will be crowned the winner, beating out even Khan and Amitabh Bachchan. (Also read: Who is India’s most successful actress? most successful actor in bollywood
Dharmendra holds the distinction of having the most hits as an actor in the Hindi film industry. The actor has a record of 74 hits to his name in movies in which he played the lead or played an important role. This actor managed to do this more prolifically than other contemporaries and juniors. In a career spanning over five decades, Dharmendra has acted in over 240 films. Of these, 94 were successful (recovered their investment) and 74 achieved what could be called hits. This includes seven blockbusters and 13 superhits, most notably Sholay, which became the highest-grossing Indian film ever.
How will Dharmendra fight against “Superstar”?
This may come as a surprise to fans of Amitabh Bachchan, widely regarded as the biggest star in Indian film history. However, he has fewer hits than Dharmendra, with 56 hits in 153 films. Because he appears in fewer movies, even if his “hit rate” is high, there are fewer hits. Among the Khans, Salman leads the list with 38 hits, followed by Shah Rukh with 34 hits and Aamir with 20 hits. Other notable hit-makers include Jeetendra (56 hits), Mithun Chakraborty (50 hits), Rajesh Khanna (38 hits) and Akshay Kumar (39).
Why Dharmendra was not called a superstar
Although Dharmendra has always been a prominent name in the Hindi film industry, he was not considered one of the greatest stars. The main reason for this was that when he first started out, he was seen as a support act for bigger stars. By the time he became a leading actor in his own right, his biggest hits were multi-star ensemble films. In the 80s, he starred in several action hits, all of which were low budget and high box office hits. Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna’s hit song further increased the box office. Thus, Dharmendra, though respected despite his many hits, was never considered to be in the same league as Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna and Dilip Kumar.
