Black Warrant web series review: Vikramaditya Motwane’s prison drama impresses viewers, ‘Netflix’s masterpiece’

Black Warrant Web Series Review: Netflix India released the country’s first prison drama ‘Black Warrant’ on Friday. The film, which is based on the non-fiction book of the same name by journalist Sunetra Chaudhary, focuses on Sunil Gupta, the former warden of Tihar Jail.

Vikramaditya Motwane, the creator of the blockbuster Sacred Games, has marked his return to digital screens with his first prison drama and feature-length storytelling on Netflix. The series offers a “thrilling exploration” of the moralistic world of Tihar, Asia’s largest prison. According to Netflix India, the series depicts Tihar prison through the perspective of a new guard, Sunil Gupta.

Netflix India said in a December 2024 press release: “The drama reveals the raw, unfiltered reality of prison life as Sunil grapples with moral dilemmas and power struggles.”

The series is brought to you by Applause Entertainment, an Andorran production company in association with Confluence Media. Besides Zahan Kapoor in the lead role, the star cast also includes Rahul Bhatt, Paramvir Singh Cheema, Anurag Thakur and Siddhant Gupta in important roles.

Black Warrant Web Series Review

Social media was abuzz after the Vikramaditya Motwane and Satyanshu Singh series premiered on OTT platform Netflix on January 10. One user called the Netflix series Black Warrant a “masterpiece” and wrote, “I couldn’t stop binge-watching it. This show is captivating, brilliantly made, and technically perfect. Visually. It’s a perfect example of how it can enhance the emotional weight of a story.
